We have chosen the traditional mexican mask for Dia de Muertos. It is used while dancing to celebrate the dead. People in Mexico believe that the spirits of the people who died go to Mictlan, which is like heaven. And once a year they come to visit their families in the living world. This celebrations is for the spirits of kids, babies and adults. The masks represent them. It can be made from different materials, such as cutted wood, plastic, painted cloth, woven reeds and paper mache. It has been used since 3,000 years ago. Our mask that we choose is a representation of a typical mexican symbol “Catrina”. In Mexico the “Catrina” is their beloved grand madame. Nowadays people draw, make and create this image as an art piece. They use it as a symbol to keep all spirits alive, it’s their image of death.
